Agree or disagree: social media platforms, like Instagram, Facebook and Twitter, are one of the best ways to drive traffic and attention to your website/sales pages.

As a small business owner, I am vigorously shaking my head, “yes.”

Social media platforms are undeniably excellent for increasing brand awareness, however when it is time to move leads towards the consideration stage, or in other words, “making the sale”, it proves difficult.

Rather than one simple step, there is the long and tiresome process of having to direct people to your website, shop, menu, etc., and you may even have to move them from one social media platform to another.

And then there are blog posts, customer reviews, podcasts, workshops, etc. to consider - how does one share it all without having to point someone in several different directions?

Well, having a ‘link in bio’ on Instagram is a key piece to your content strategy!

While most social media platforms allow for users to share information about their business [i.e. you can provide details in Facebook’s ‘About’ section, with similar features existing on LinkedIn and Twitter], Instagram remained the only platform that did not allow for a direct ‘link in bio’ for the longest time.

However, this all changed speedily enough and now a single hyperlink can be added in a person’s Instagram bio. This ‘link in bio’ indicates a clickable URL to your profile details, and can provide vital information about your business and products.

Most often people add the link to their business page/contacts in order for their audience to get in touch with their company with ease. People also include a ‘link in bio’ that consists of a series of other links (this is what I recommend!).

The link you put in your profile is ultimately a way for your followers to discover what is important to your business at the moment; it can spark a person’s interest, as well as produce clicks and leads.

The ‘link in bio’ can definitely be a powerful tool for your social media presence, but it is important to use it wisely, as well as factor in your goals and what you want to accomplish.

Lucky for you, I am sharing my knowledge on what to include and what not to include in a ‘link in bio’, with the aim of helping you to achieve successful social media marketing for your business and its growth. Read on -

WHAT TO INCLUDE IN A ‘LINK IN BIO’

Your Website/Blog

Whether it is your personal website, blog or portfolio, linking to it is an easy and foolproof way to direct traffic and showcase your work. However, it is important to update your website content on a regular basis to ensure that your ‘link in bio’ is relevant to whatever you are currently offering/promoting.

1-2 Freebies

Including valuable content/resources via your ‘link in bio’ at *no cost* creates an immediate sense of trust and credibility with your target audience, sparking engagement and deepening your connection. Furthermore, by offering freebies you are giving people a reason to click on your link and visit your profile. This can lead to increased visibility, and yes, even more engagement! Not only that, by promoting your freebie, you are also building your email list which is so important.

Anything You Are Talking About/Promoting On Your Socials

A great way to increase your traffic is to include whatever it is you are promoting on your social media channels - whether that be content or campaigns -  to your ‘link in bio.’ For example, if you have a podcast, link to your most recent episode or a stand-out episode that you would like to highlight.

Your Other Social Media Profiles

Lastly, in order for your audience to connect with you on multiple platforms and engage with your content in different ways, be sure to include links to your other social media profiles/platforms for further engagement.

WHAT NOT TO INCLUDE IN A ‘LINK IN BIO’

Spammy websites

Steer clear of including links in your ‘link in bio’ that may direct your audience to suspicious websites (nobody likes spam!). Be sure that the links you are sharing are 100% trustworthy and provide genuine value to your followers.

Excessive Ads Or Affiliate Links

While it is common to include multiple links in your bio, this may be overwhelming for your audience because of the seemingly endless options. You certainly do not want to confuse people or take away from the effectiveness of your main call-to-action, so remember, less is more!

Irrelevant Links

Keep your ‘link in bio’ relevant to what you are talking about or promoting on your social media channels. In other words, don’t get caught up in links that are unable to boost your brand, content or promotions; stay focused on your ultimate goals as a business.

Private/Personal Information

As a final note, it is crucial to protect your privacy and only share appropriate contact details in your ‘link in bio.’ Stay professional and avoid adding sensitive details about yourself, such as your home address or personal phone number.
